Earbits
Because there aren’t enough ways for you, our devoted fans, to listen to Détective music for free on the internet, we’d like to point you to a new-ish site called Earbits, which bills itself thusly: “Earbits is commercial-free online radio for top independent music.”
We believe ourselves to be top independent music, if only because the alternative would be bottom independent music, and we’re not sure what that means but it sounds a little passive. Anyway. Go here to listen to us and other top independent artists. Because we’re sure there are others.
Monochrome Girl
The clip for “Monochrome Girl” by L.A.’s Détective is shot beautifully (in part at Columbus, Ohio’s North Market), complementing the song’s lovely lo-fi, Forsteresque melancholy. Oh, and if you follow them on Tumblr you’ll learn a great deal about the history of cinema. Their Basket of Masks EP is out now.
Here’s the official video for our song “Monochrome Girl” from the EP Basket of Masks. It’s available on vinyl or as a free download (with bonus tracks!) from Bandcamp. The video was directed by Mike Postalakis and we are big fans of Mike Postalakis and of this video. We hope you enjoy it.
We’re off to the record-pressing place to pick up the vinyl for our new EP Basket of Masks. We’re VERY EXCITED about this and hope that you will enjoy the record as much as we enjoyed making the record.
For those of you who pre-ordered, than you for your patience. One downside to the upsurge in interest in vinyl is that the pressing plants are back-logged these days.
For those who haven’t ordered yet and would like to do so, you can click here.
Captain’s Dead
The widely-read and muchly-esteemed music website Captain’s Dead wrote a very nice review of our forthcoming EP Basket of Masks which you can read in its entirety by clicking this link.
Suffice to say any post that’s tagged “best of 2012″ is okay by us.
Radio Readymade
Sorry for the short notice, but if you’re a) alive and b) able to listen to things on the internet, we are appearing alive and on the internet tonight on a show called Radio Readymade at a place called Luxuria Music. You can click on either of those links and it will take you to the place where you can listen to the show. We will be in the studio starting at 9PM PST until whenever they make us leave. We’re not performing music but we will be playing music, and talking, and asking questions, the answers to which will win you prizes. So there’s that.
jour férié
Today our EP Basket of Masks is released digitally, meaning that if you pre-ordered either the digital or vinyl version of the EP at Bandcamp, you’ll be getting a link via email to the whole thing. Including the two hidden bonus tracks (digital only). If you did not pre-order, you still get the bonus tracks, but you don’t get the Very Fallen World EP which you would have gotten with the pre-order. Vinyl pre-orders, we hasten to add, are still on-going, and will be until we receive the physical product, sometime in May. If you do pre-order the vinyl, you also get the limited edition CD of Very Fallen World. So there’s that.
We’re going back into the studio today to record a whole bunch of new songs, but we did want to let you know about the release thing. Have a very pleasant day.
Thanks to Seraphina and to Kevin Bronson, too, at Buzz Bands LA for this very nice notice posted on their site today:
The music of the L.A. trio Détective sounds as if it could have come from dusty tapes found in the 4AD archive. Named in honor of the Jean-Luc Godard film, Détective is the collaboration between bassist Guylaine Vivarat (Useless Keys and ex-Tennis System), James Greer (the author, screenwriter and ex-Guided By Voices bassist and biographer) and drummer Rory Modica (Useless Keys). Their second EP in as many months, “Basket of Masks,” trades in coy pop melodies, gritty post-punk guitar riffs and proggy krautrock instrumentals. Their sparse, lo-fi structures don’t sacrifice texture, though; Vivarat and Greer have found the delicate balance between sweet and off-kilter that recall Stereolab and some Morr Music luminaries. “Baskets of Masks,” the follow-up to February’s “Very Fallen World,” is slated for a April 17 digital release and for a May 22 limited 12-inch vinyl release.
Okay, so we have a new EP, called Basket of Masks, set to release on limited edition (300) 12″ 45r.p.m. vinyl in late May. You can pre-order it now by going here. If you pre-order before it ships, we’ll include as a bonus the limited edition CD of our previous EP, Very Fallen World.
The digital version of Basket of Masks will be released on April 17. You can also pre-order it now, and all pre-orders will get a free download code for Very Fallen World, and a hidden bonus track (download only).
You can do all or none of these things by clicking on the link here.
We hope you enjoy the new record. We had fun making it.
