Mission Creek2

We’re pretty much recovered from our month-plus spring tour, and we’ve been in and out of the studio since we got back to Los Angeles,  but we’ve got a lot of stuff in the offing, some of which we thought you might like to hear about, to wit:

A late August/early September release of our new album Hilarious Heaven in several popular formats. Not including 8-track because we can’t find anyone who still makes 8-tracks.

A West Coast tour in early August.

A full US tour in September/October.

Culminating in an appearance at the Pygmalion Music Festival.

A series of interlinked videos for songs from Hilarious Heaven (which may or may not still be a double album, depending on whether we decide that it’s worth putting out a double album, among other factors).

Other stuff TBA. Lots of other stuff. Exciting stuff. Or at least interesting stuff.

If you’d like to be kept abreast of all things Détective-related, please do not hesitate to sign up for our mailing list using the simple-as-red-velvet-cake signup form to the right of this post. We promise never to sell your email address (unless we get offered a lot of money for it) or to spam you with irrelevant news (unless we get offered a lot of money to do so).

We thank you from the bottom of our black hearts for your support over the first year of our existence, and hope that you will stick with us through our Terrible Twos.

Love,

Guylaine, James and Chris

Because there aren’t enough ways for you, our devoted fans, to listen to Détective music for free on the internet, we’d like to point you to a new-ish site called Earbits, which bills itself thusly: “Earbits is commercial-free online radio for top independent music.

We believe ourselves to be top independent music, if only because the alternative would be bottom independent music, and we’re not sure what that means but it sounds a little passive. Anyway. Go here to listen to us and other top independent artists. Because we’re sure there are others.

Here’s our new video. It’s for the song “Man Near the Surface of the Earth” from the album However Strange which you can listen to and download here or buy in the popular cassette format from Burger Records here.

The video is kind of an homage to the 1968 film The Swimmer starring Burt Lancaster, which was itself based on a story by John Cheever. We’re very grateful to director Robert Sobul and his team for making this for us. Guylaine and James even have a brief cameo a few minutes in! Sadly Chris could not make it to the shoot that day because he was busy counting stacks of gold coins in his castle. That has a moat.

Jean Seberg and Jean Paul Belmondo in A bout de souffle [AKA Breathless]

(Jean-Luc Godard, 1960)

Why, after some twenty-odd years, am I just now noticing that the the two principal actors and the director of A bout de souffle share the same first name (or at least the first part of the first name)? Is that the secret to filmmaking success? Probably not.

“We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand. The artist must know the manner whereby to convince others of the truthfulness of his lies.”
